The Beech Mountain Academy athletes are invited to participate in one or more weeks of a 4 week race training camp this summer at Mt. Hood, Oregon! This program was put together by Joe Lackey and the Asheville Ski Club and is especially for southeastern racers. The first week will begin Sunday, June 25th.
-Athletes will stay in a 70-bed lodge in Government Camp.
-Brenda Mulcahy will be Camp Director - she spent a couple decades at Wachusettes Mtn in Mass. Brenda will be one of our guest coaches as well.
-We currently have around 40 kids signed up to participate. But we are eager to get more - especially kids from our other SARA mountains. We are wanting to host about 30-kids per week.
-Weekly cost is $950. This includes training, food, lodging, activities off the mountain, training/lift tickets transportation while there, etc.
-We are planning on this to be an annual event, not just a one-off adventure.

Another fabulous weekend of racing for both the Alpine and Freestyle Team! Sunday was jam packed with Alpine racing at Sugar Mountain Resort and Freestyle Competing in a Slopestyle in the Park of Beech Mountain. Many freestyle members stayed and competed in USASA's Slopestyle following. I'll be posting the results from the Slopestyle Competition.
Welcome to the Freestyle Team Davis and Drake, a skier and snowboarder.

High Country Junior Race Series has postponed the race at Sugar Mountain this weekend due to the lack of snow. It has been rescheduled for February 19th (Presidents Day Weekend). Friday and Saturday Practices will be held as usual this weekend, however the Alpine Team will not be setting any gates. Cold weather is in the forecast for next week!HCJRS 1-22-17 is Rescheduled
Many thanks to the Freestyle Coaches for coming out this weekend and working with the kids! Not only did they help with coaching, they also pitched in when help was needed, I saw a few running the lifts and at the tubing hill. If you see them, ask what the job of "catcher" involves on the tubing hill!
Coach John Kevin - I enjoyed riding with the kids in the park all weekend. It is nice having this area when the slopes get crowded alleviating the traffic from the quad. We practiced 3's and backflips, Nate showing everyone how it was DONE!
Coach Daniel - Ethan, Matthew and I worked in the park, practicing different techniques. I took a lot of videos of the weekend and will forward accordingly.
Coach Aaron - Working on confidence with different kids, I was proud seeing some getting back to the tricks they used to do after a few spills. I think the confidence is there to take it to the next level when practice resumes.
Practice resumes this weekend according to BMSEF policies, I will send out an operational email after meetings on Thursday assessing conditions, etc. I am also meeting with App Ski Mountain this week finishing up scheduling the HCJFS for the Freestyle Team.
SoGnar Snowboard Camp is scheduled for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday. Registration is still open!
Have a great week everyone and see everyone on the snow this weekend!
Most of you probably heard that the open house had to be postponed last weekend due to the resort closing. However, it has been rescheduled to THIS SATURDAY, December 10th! We invite all prospective families to join us in the team room at 8:30am for morning practice or at 12:30 for afternoon practice. Please meet in the team room, ready to ski or snowboard! We will be having a regular practice for all current team members, so prospective athletes will be joining a group to get a feel for what being on a Beech Mountain Academy team is like! If you have not yet registered you will also be able to register at this time!
Current Alpine Team Members:
Practice starts at 8:30. Please be on time! Your groups will not wait for you to arrive. The practice schedule this year will be much more structured and strict with timing. Athletes with two pairs of skis should bring both pairs every morning and athletes 10 and older should bring their Slalom Gear* every day.
*Athletes 10 and older will not be permitted to run slalom gates without a face guard on their helmet. Face guards must also be removed for giant slalom training and races.
8:00- Sign In- The team room is generally open very early so arrive with plenty of time to gear up. Athletes under 12 will need a parent to sign them in to practice. Athletes 12 and older can sign themselves in. Do not forget to sign in!
8:30 Team Meeting- Athletes and Parents should be in the team room for this brief meeting that we will be having before practice EVERY Saturday. This is when groups will be assigned at the first practice and the Team Room Parent will be announced. Please be sure
8:45 Warm-Up on Play Yard Slope- Groups will go out to the play yard together to warm up. Have your skis and gear, we will not go back inside after the warm-up.
9:00 Load the Quad- Athletes head up the hill with their assigned group and coach.
*Groups may take a break in the team room between 9 and 11:30 or 12:30 and 3 if weather is harsh but athletes will not leave the team room during this time so keep extra layers or snacks in their cubbies.
11:30 Lunch- Groups will report back to the team room. During this time, the Beech Mountain Academy coaches are not responsible for athletes. For younger athletes, parents should meet their athletes in the team room. Athletes under 12 will need parent permission (on sign-in sheet) to be allowed to leave the team room without a parent at lunch.
12:30 Load the Quad- Athletes should have already arrived and geared up for the second half of practice. At this time groups will leave the team room together to load the quad.
